Jamie Jones mixes the next Fabric

Jamie Jones has mixed the next Fabric installment, due out in September. 

Co-head of the Hot Creations label along with Lee Foss, Jones has seen his stock rise considerably over the past few years, garnering him the #6 slot in the RA DJ poll That's largely down to the pop-inflected house that Jones has begun to peddle more regularly. Fans can expect a large dose of that on Fabric 59, which sees Jones teaming with Foss as Hot Natured on two tracks and plenty of edits from Jones himself as well. Felix Da Housecat, Crazy P and Oppenheimer Analysis all feature as well, the latter of which no doubt adds an old school flavor to the mix.

When Ashique Subhan first heard the late night beats of Radio 1 beaming into his adolescent bedroom he knew there was no turning back. At a mere 23 years of age, following his decisive turn into music, taking sound design at college and summers spent in Ibiza’s DC10 Subb-an is an key player in the UK born party crew that are currently taking the house music world by storm and is the focus of our blog takeover this week - Hot Natured. 

Here we speak to Subb-an in depth about his story from beginning to end and how the weird and wonderful sounds of Kerrier District spurred him onto create his own disco driven dance music.

What’s your own history with electronic music—how did you discover it and how did you come to start making it? 

I was exposed to electronic music around the age of eleven or twelve through the radio, mainly the late night Essential Selections on Radio 1. I really can't say that there was an exact pivotal point in discovering electronic music. Finding the music and enjoying it was a really organic and natural progression over time in which I discovered genres myself through certain portals like the radio and TV. I never had anyone passing music on to me.

I bought turntables at the age of twelve… I only knew of the existence of these and what they were used for via a friend who had a pair himself, but he mixed hip-hop. My first pair were belt driven and cost £100 which I guess was a cheap deal but you get what you pay for, which was a pony pair of turntables that were very hard to learn on... I eventually got there after 2 years of self-teaching.

You enrolled on a digital music production course at the age of sixteen and went on to graduate with a top degree in sound design from Birmingham City Uni in 2009….What is it about sound design that inspires you so much? 

I knew music and being some form of an artist was what I wanted from a very young age. I could really express myself through these channels and something really resonated through me when I discovered music, vinyl and turntables. So by 16 I was at my first crossroads in my life, which was to pursue my original interest in the motor industry or go to college and study sound. It was my gut feeling to go with that so I did, and I have always been in that mind set, to go with your gut feeling and be confident and happy about it, other wise why are you doing it…?

Drawing on sound design, this is something I've developed in the last two years as I've matured musically and technically. I've always loved electronic music but at the start it was just a case of being able to make something, whether that sounded good or bad. Now things are a bit more advanced I really crave amazing sound design in music I hear and my own music. I always enjoy music from artists like James Teej, Morgan Geist and Kerrier District for this reason. 

Do you DJ, play live, or both? What are your sets like?

I play both although I am probably known more as a live act, however am getting booked to DJ a lot too. Live is all my own productions so if you know my sound then you will know its up-tempo and very dance-floor, but got some soul and swing to it.

How important is the freedom of self-expression at the Hot Natured parties and how do you connect to its music philosophy? 

I really like what Jamie, Lee and Richy do, they get the balance of songs and tracks right and through this people can and do express themselves, which of course, is pretty crucial at any party.

Can you tell us some of your favourite tales from the Hot Natured raves so far…?

Dancing on the tables like a looney at The Electric Pickle in Miami at 11 am on a Monday morning therefore missing my flight back to the UK a couple of weeks ago...

How do you plan to make 2011 a defining year? What upcoming releases & parties do you have in the pipeline and what are your summer takeover plans? 

Productions wise I have a new 2020 release with Adam Shelton which is out this month, followed by a solo release on Tsuba in May and then I have a great project with a female artist from L.A. which featured two tracks that fall in June on Crosstown Rebels. Aside from those I’m working on more tracks for Spectral Sound with Beckford and also some new bits for Culprit for later in the year. Me and Adam [Shelton] also work on a project called S.A.S (Subb-an and Shelton) in which we have another EP for Matt Tolfrey's Foot & Mouth label plus a release for Jamie Jones’ Hot Re-Rubs and some remixes and extra edits that hit around summer. There is also a lot of great music on mine and Adam’s label; One Records, from artists Kris Wadsworth, Clive Henry, Hector, Rob Mello, Alex Arnout, Burnski, and Jozif that are all due over the next 6 months.

Events wise, we have some great label parties confirmed at Sonar and Space through the summer. Below is back for the summer too, in Birmingham we are doing 6/7 parties with the following confirmed artists: Jef K, Rob Mello, Jozif, Alex Arnout, Tale Of Ss, Dyed Soundorom, Jordan Peak, Chris Duckenfield, Argy, and Craig Richards. The main thing on my horizon at present though is the fact that I’m moving to Berlin in May for the summer, which I’m really excited about…The main date I’m looking forward to is closing the WOW dance tent at Glastonbury on the Friday night with Beckford. We will be doing a live set especially for this which should be one of our standout gigs of the summer.

Art Department talk the future

Jonny White and Kenny Glasgow are two well-recognized veterans in theCanadian dance music scene, but neither have had the popular impact they've had together as Art Department. The awareness of the duo has been building for many months now and they've moved beyond the dance music ghetto in to the same rarified air that kicked off the DFA era last decade.

Art Department's album The Drawing Board is a culmination of all those pop influences bombarding dance music for the past ten year and offers a sea change moment, as even White alludes to in our interview time together. Timing is everything, because A.D. isn't the only artist out there exploring the radio-friendly possibilities that current dance music trends have to offer, but for whatever reason these guys have been the new it-kids.

But that is often the case in the crazy world of pop music and who knows where it will end up, but expect somebody like Rihanna or Beyonce to making the call to A.D. soon.

But for now, White and Glasgow are poised for that success, right at that moment before it all unfolds, when it is both kinetic and alive with potential.

That pause before the next breath, I. Voice got a unique opportunity to capture that moment in this brief interview with Jonny White.

There's a lot of buzz around the album did you ever think, after years of making tracks, that the Art Department project would be the one that would make such a big impact?
No, of course you can't predict that a project will catch the way that Art Department has.  However, we have never had this type of support on any previous projects - i.e. Having the Crosstown team behind us and all of our friends behind us so we did have high hopes, as we do with anything we undertake.

Tell us a little bit about making the album, what are some of your personal favorite tracks from it and what are some of your fondest memories in the studio during the making?
We love the entire album... I don't know that we really like one or two best because they each represent a different idea and time in the writing process. I think my fondest memory of studio time spent while writing the Drawing Board was the five days we spent in the studio with Soul Clapat my place in Toronto... Five days, camped out around my living room off your head making music with Soul Clap.

The album feels like a collection of music that needs to be listened to in its entirety with many twists and turns. Was there a conscious reject of the current notion of dance music LPs that makes every track a big singles that offer only variations on a theme that leaves fans only to select their favorites or was this just mere coincidence, the unconscious part of the creative process?
We're very proud of the ALBUM we just wrote. It certainly wasn't a collection of singles tossed together to fill ten slots.

What, in your opinion, draws people to your music? It seems to cross musical tastes and age groups to find wide appeal. Few electronic music acts seem to enjoy that success without making pop music concessions so perhaps you can share some insights with us?
I think a lot of it is timing. I think that people are hungry for change and for the next sound and as a result also very open-minded.

What are your touring plans for the album?
We've been touring non-stop since last August and there's no end in sight so we'll be continuing with our regular schedule - Europe, North and South America, and everywhere in between.

Where will you be playing at in Miami and for which WMC?
Well you've actually caught me during the after party here in Miami for the Hot Natured show at the Electric Pickle, which was really special. We also played the DJ Mag pool party, Flying Circus, Circoloco, Get Lost, and my No.19 label showcase all of which were really amazing shows.

Any thoughts on the WMC controversy?
I don't really know what was behind this year's scheduling so it's not really for me to comment on. Although I can say that it definitely took a bit of a toll on the numbers at some events, shows like Lawler's Light's Out with massive lineups were cancelled due to lack of ticket sales, while we managed to sell out Get Lost, Hot Natured, andNo.19 which was a pleasant surprise and a bit of a glimpse into the immediate future.

Ibiza this summer for Art Department? Where will you be playing at?
As of now we'll be playing Circoloco @ DC10 quite consistently and see what else falls into place.

What other things can we expect from Art Department this year musically?
We've been working on loads of remixes over the last several months since completing the album. A few on the way include a remix of Damian's "Different Now", Azari & lll "Hungry For The Power" and Jamie Jones"Paradise".

 One of the biggest success stories of the 2010 Ibiza season was undoubtedly Cadenza’s Sunday night takeover of Pacha, led by the label’s chief Luciano. The Chilean powerhouse has upped the stakes this year, inviting back his fellow Cadenza stars Reboot, Michel Cleis and Robert Dietz, while also making room in the booth for distinguished ring-ins like Dixon, Carl Craig, Stacey Pullen, DJ Koze and Daniel Bell.

In collaboration with the ‘Double Lucky’ and ‘The Butcher Shop’ we invite you come and de-stress after a crazy Easter period and jump into a straight Sunday vibe on May 22nd. The town of Vincent have cut the red tape, allowing us make the surrounding laneway ours by fencing off the area and splaying out an externally located bar, sound/Dj booth, and furniture set-up for your laziness.

Slide through any time between 2pm to 7pm to catch the re-paint of Double Lucky’s three outer walls by a selection of the cream of the crop of Perth Aerosol artists. We’ve blacked out the walls to create a blank canvas for you to watch the masterpiece come together, live. After the sunsets, the party moves inside for an intimate mix-up both of tunes and dranks til 10pm!

Ol school / funky Hip Hop, Broken Beat & some melodic Dubstep sounds for good measure will be the soundtrack of the day. 

Delivered by an All-star local line-up.
